BY LAND: From the north, take the Florida Turnpike south to just below Ft. Lauderdale to Exit 4 - Homestead/Key West (the turnpike extension). This meets U.S. 1 to Florida City. U.S. 1 takes you to Islamorada, some 45 minutes south. From the West: Come across I-75 (Alligator Alley) to the Miami Exit and south to the Turnpike Extension. From Miami International Airport: Take LeJeune Road south to 836 West, going to the Turnpike Extension, south to U.S. 1 and to the Keys. BY SEA: The Intercoastal Waterway from Miami passes through Card Sound, Barnes Sound, under Jewfish Creek drawbridge into Blackwater Sound, to Tarpon and Buttonwood Sounds and Florida Bay, a course limited to boats drawing no more than 5 feet. Hawks Channel, a buoyed passage between the reefs and the Keys is deeper. |
