| Matecumbe Historical Trust May Lecture The Matecumbe Historical Trust May lecture and social will be held at 6:30 pm at Island Community Church, mm 83. Guest Speaker Dr. Robert L. Golds topic will be Ponce de Leon: Adelantado de La Florida This is the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León's arrival on Florida's east coast. Ponce de León's convoy of explorers was the first group of Europeans to document such a landing and give a name to Florida - La Florida. Dr. Gold is a Professor of Latin American History and the author of two books and more than two hundred articles, columns and reviews on Florida history. His specialty is Spanish Florida in the colonial period. Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spaniard who officially discovered Florida, has remained a controversial figure throughout history. There are at least three well-known controversies in which the adelantado (explorer) has been involved. One concerns his search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. The second concerns the claim that he was, in fact, the first Spaniard to discover Florida. Finally, the third controversy focuses on the site where he first landed in Florida. For centuries, St. Augustine has been assumed to be that place. But with the advent of contemporary archaeology is the Oldest City still considered the place of his first landing? All three of these controversies will be addressed by Dr. Gold along with other fascinating aspects of Ponce de Leons life. The lecture is free and open to the public.
